On 3 august the sec1 guides went the heath promotion board for our dynamite badge.upon our reach, we were given worksheets to complete and roughly brief on what todo, then we set off for an answer hunt.i learnt from the hunt many things such as , engaging in regular physical activities keeps us healthy, makes us feel good and look good.also, eating heathly dosent mean skipping snacks intead,it is about controlling our trans fat intake.we also had to complete two challenges that was part of the worksheet.for one of the challenges we had to name ten sports continuously as a group and could not reapeat the sports that our friends had already mentioned. at first we kept repeating the common sports but we coordinated at the end and completed the challenge successfuly.soon we were ask to go to a workshop to check our answers.after that we were given some free time to walk around the place where we got our answers and tried some of the games there as well.on the whole, this activity was fun and engaging.

Reflections for 3/8 (Pineapple Turnover Cake)

On 3rd August 2012(Friday), the sec 1s went out of school for their dynamite badge. The rest of us stayed in school and did our drillings. Later at around 4.30pm, we started making our pineapple turnover cake. We(Ying Ying, Christie, Jasmine, Bing Pei and I) were hoping that it would be a success as we practiced a few times just for this day with the help of the seniors and ex seniors. Firstly, we asked the leaders of each group to go to Christie and Bing Pei to learn how to prepare the caramel and batter, and for the rest of the group members to follow Jasmine, Ying Ying and I to dig a hole in the field and start the fire. To start, we showed them how to dig the hole, making the perimeter of the square-shaped hole before digging. After that, we showed them how to start the fire with mao mao and twigs. Jasmine curled up the mao mao and placed it in the hole, after which Ying Ying then followed to place the twigs leaning against each other to surround the mao mao. With that settled, we started the fire with a few matchsticks. With much effort and several tries, the fire was lit. We instructed the members of each group to add the firewood in after the twigs were burnt and when the fire was strong. While they were busy trying to start the fire, I asked 2 people from each group to follow me to collect the firewood. When the fire was strong enough, we told them the next step which was to cook the caramel over the fire. We took around 45 minutes for the firewood to burn completely, so there will be enough heat for the batter to cook. Later, we put out the fire and took out some ember. We then proceeded to place our batter which was ready and wrapped in aluminium foil into the hole filled with embers created by the burnt firewood. We then placed the embers that we took out over the tray, on top of the covered batter, so that the top of the cake can also be cooked. After 20 minutes, we took out our cake and it was not completely cooked, which we then placed it back in for another 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, we had our ready-to-eat cake! Excited, everyone dug in, feeding one another with a spoon or fork. We all enjoyed the product of our hard work.

Reflections for 3/8/12 Activity :)

Guides activity started with the usual - greeting and uniform check.
Due to the rain, flag raising was cancelled. As a result, we were told to change out of our uniform. At first, Fiona CL gave us 5 minutes to change out. However, we exceeded the time limit and were told to change back into full-uniform, now within a shorter time limit. The second time, someone did not change out, and we were told to change back. Finally, after changing in half-uniform for the second time, we stopped.
While the Sec 1s left for their health dynamite badge, the Sec 2s stayed behind in school. The seniors taught us how to do the Horseshoe formation and we also learnt about the Colour party. With help from the seniors, we finally understood and were able form up.
After that, we did a little drilling, and then we did the pineapple turnover cake!
While the leaders were making the batter, the rest of us stayed on the field. Initially, my group was allocated to a spot near the basketball court. However, after numerous failed attempts at turfing the ground, we moved to a spot near the field. Having moved 4 times, we were rather frustrated that there was a rock everywhere we turfed. At last, we succeeded in making a hole wide and deep enough.
Next, was starting the fire. The firelighting was easy to do, as all of us had tried lighting fires many times in the past. After lighting the fire, we heated the caramel over it. The fire was larger than we expected it to be. A lot larger. I was actually kind of intimidated when I saw how big the fire was.
After heating the caramel, we waited for the fire to die down before heating the batter. The batter was to be heated over the embers. It could not be placed over a fire as it would melt the aluminium tray. While waiting for the fire to die down, the fire was instead put out prematurely at least thrice. We had a good laugh, watching Cherie fervently working to revive the fire.
After a long, long wait the fire finally died down by itself. We placed the tray on the embers, and waited for the cake to be cooked. After an extremely long wait, we finally brought the cake away from the embers! We quickly cleared up the area and brought the cake to the concourse.
The cake was good. At least, it was good for a first attempt. It was a little burnt at the sides, but it tasted alright! :)
Overall, I enjoyed activity on that day. Hurray for the cake! ^^
