2014 CAMP REFLECTIONS (:

This year's year-end camp was held from 18 to 20 November. 

On 18 November, early in the morning at 0730, we reported for our year-end camp with our backpacks filled with the items needed. The Secondary 3s collected our valuables and placed them into a zip lock bag with the patrols' names stated on it. They proceeded to check our bags and my day pack was transparent so my PS could just check my bags with ease. The first day of camp did not start off very well as it soon started to rain... After which, the rain stopped for a while and we were given an hour to pitch our tents. However, things were not going very well for us. Some areas were not suitable to pitch the tents, while others were very muddy. The mud had caused most of our shoes to dirty on the first day of camp. Soon, it started to rain again. We did some drilling and camp preparations. As the weather was not suitable for us to have the planned Wide Games, we had our Guides initiative, which was making of dream catcher instead. I enjoyed making the dream catcher, although I did it badly :P It was lunch time! Our lunch were catered food in packets. After we finished our food, we played "Murderer" before continuing the making of dream catcher. We then have our outdoor cooking using the outdoor oven we made. The outdoor oven is very useful and it also saves electricity! We had our dinner after we cooked. We also bathed before we played some bonding games. Then, we had our supper and did our reflections before turning in.

My patrol had to wake up early to prepare the exercised we need to lead as we were in charge of "Health" that day. We did some exercises and stretches, and ran around the Chung Cheng lake once. After breakfast, we headed to Dhoby Ghaut MRT station for the Laser Ops. During the two team games, we bonded and strategize our plan as a patrol, building up the trust and relationships with one another. Laser Ops is really a fun game and we had a whale of time playing it! After lunch, we had our Wide Games. We had to use the given clues to find the places and complete the tasks given. The map given was not very clear and we had a hard time finding as we did not have GPS nor 3G to help us find the places using Google Map. (Well, at least we managed to complete 4 out of 8 tasks.) Soon, we had campfire after having our dinner! My patrol was the first to present our flag, cheer, identity and skit. We also had some games in between the presentations and performances of other patrols

The third day, we strike our tents and played the "Running Man" game planned by the Secondary 2s! It was really fun and my patrol got the most number of tokens! After which, we gave the gifts we prepared to our Manitas and did some area cleaning before heading home!

Overall, I like the bonding games we had during our free time. It bonds our relationship with other guides from other company, patrol and/or level, causing the guides family to be more close! I like the tent pitching the least as it rained and the field was very muddy, causing my shoes to be dirty on the first day of camp. I like the token system pretty much and encourages the system to be continued. The token system has encourages us to work as a patrol well. Moreover, every token earned counts! Helping your patrol earn a token, makes me feel happy and a sense of achievement. 

All in all, after the 3 days 2 nights camp, I really bonded well with my patrol and other guides. It was expected to be rather tough but it was fun instead as we had many bonding games!

Camp Training Course @ Camp Christine REFLECTIONS :)

Erin and I attended the Camp Training Course organised for girl guides from all over Singapore. It was my first time having a four day three night camp at Camp Christine and with guides from other schools. All of us gathered at the guides headquarters before a bus took us to the camp site. Once we arrived , the camp commander assigned us to our own patrols by our school division. Since there was only 6 guides from the east division , we were grouped together. We then proceeded to pitch our own canvas tent and we did quite well for our first time. Pitching a canvas tent was very different from the normal tents that we used in our school camp as it required more effort and skills to be able to pitch. Next we did all our tent gadgets such as shoe rack , baggage rack etc. Also for the first time ever , I tried making kitchen gadgets and it was much harder than tent gadgets as it was a whole lot bigger in size. 
The next day we did outdoor cooking and we cooked bee hoon , chicken and made chocolate banana for dessert. We first tied a tripod stand before hanging the chicken on the tripod over the amber of the charcoal. It was my first time cooking a whole chicken during outdoor cooking and I found that it was interesting. At night , they taught us how to organise a campfire through several slide shows and the different roles that each patrol can choose to take up in the organizing of the camp fire. My patrol chose to made the souvenirs for the campfire for our fellow guides to bring home. At first , we did not know what we wanted to make as we had limited items. However on day three , when we went for survival training , the instructor taught us that we could use the leaves of a plant to make it into a bracelet or necklace. We then proceeded to make the souvenirs with the fallen leaves and everyone was impressed with what we had made. Campfire night was really fun as it was the night where we truly bonded together as a whole camp as well as with our camp commander , qm and aqm. Through Camp Training Course , I made new friends from other schools and also learned a lot of useful camping skills which I can impart to my juniors. It was truly an eye opening experience for me as I had a chance to widen my camp skills , learn how to plan a camp if I was put in charge and I am thankful for this wonderful opportunity given to me.

Camping at Camp Christine whoohooo! - Reflections-

On 29 October to 1 November, along with Xi Wen, we went for a 4 day 3 night camp at camp Christine. This camp was quite fun and I really enjoyed myself as I think I've learnt a lot from this camp. 

On the first day we had to pitch our canvas tents and make our gadgets. I have never really pitched a canvas tent before so it was something new for me, but thankfully the trainers there and the other guides were very patient in teaching me. This was also my first time sleeping in a canvas tent, and I realized that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be at first!

The next day, we had outdoor cooking. We did everything from scratch including chopping the wood ourselves. At last when we got to eat the food we cooked ourselves, everyone was really happy and the food surprisingly tasted really good! We had bee hoon soup, chicken, fish and also chocolate banana for dessert! The chocolate banana was so delicious everyone couldn't stop eating it. Then we also played some bonding games with our patrol and at night, we were taught how to organize a campfire and the songs we can sing. It was really fun and everyone enjoyed themselves singing and cheering together in preparation for the campfire.

The next day, we went out of camp Christine to dairy farm adventure centre. We had a survival training there and It was so interesting as I saw so many plants I haven't seen before and I even learnt which plants are edible and what are the uses of different plants. That night, we had our long awaited campfire!! I really enjoyed myself a lot as everyone was so happy and cheerful, it was a really wonderful night. Also, the campfire was plan from scratch by every single one of us and my patrol was in charge or making door gifts. We made everyone a bracelet using flowers and i think they liked it.

I think this camp was a really memorable one and the knowledge I've learnt will definitely benefit me. Also, I'm really thankful for the people I met there, especially my patrol mates because they were the ones that were there with me throughout and we really had fun together! (:

Duty Roster

Hello Guides!! (-:

Please follow this duty roster and help out with the cleaning of the Guides room! We will have to clean the room once every 3 weeks (on Thursdays), and we will take turns according to your patrols. Please bring the necessary items for your individual task (eg cloth) and if you are unable to go please inform us beforehand so we can make necessary arrangements. If you have any queries feel free to ask your QMs!! We will print this checklist and it will be pasted on the Guides room door and please tick it when you've completed your task. Please report on time at 3pm in either your uniform or pe attire outside the Guides room and it will end at about 4.30pm. When you are done with your task, do help out with others that need help!!

Instructions for different tasks:

• Wiping of windows- ensure all window panes and grills are cleaned
• Wiping of cupboards- ensure all surfaces of cupboards are cleaned, including metal cupboard which keeps firewood (both inner and outer sides)
• Sweeping of floor- ensure all areas are swept (including under the area under the tables, the corners, space around equipment)
• Wiping of frames and organising metal drawer- ensure all photo frames (those on top of cupboards with the Guides law etc) and sort out items inside metal drawer (dispose expired items and items not fit to be used)
• Organising of gadget poles- ensure all gadget poles are packed with the right sizes, in bundles of 10 poles (if unsure of how to tie, ask QM present), make sure it is neatly arranged 
• Organising contents of cupboards- ensure items inside are arranged neatly/stacked neatly
• Cleaning and organising of benches and tables- ensure there are no items placed on the table, ensure the chairs are arranged neatly and surface of chairs and table are cleaned, help out to clean surfaces of cupboards

Acitvity Resumes! 15 Oct '14

EOY just ended and I hope you guys have a good break during the weekends! Guides activity will resume this Wednesday 15 October and you will be having your 8th initiative, STAMP MAKING! Please remember to bring a Penknife and a piece of blank paper per person and be prepared for the next Guides Activity!

2015 World Thinking Day! :-D

THEME 

GGS Commemorates SG50 : Celebrating our Roots.  The theme is aligned to our nation’s 50th year of independence. 

COMPETITIONS

To create greater awareness and to promote the theme for 2015, units are encouraged to participate in the Banner Design, Campfire Stunt/Skit, Dance, Gateway Design and Yarn competitions.

Notice about storing of twigs/maomao

Hello Guides (:
From now onwards, if you leave your twigs/maomao unguarded after using it(for fire lighting/outdoor cooking etc), we will dispose it and there will be NO more storing of maomao or twigs in the Guides room for future usage as it attracts insects.
